Somerset House An Encyclopedia of British Royal Palaces and Royal Builders

Also, they don't have the respite care there. They just simply have you move in, and then you give a 30-day notice to move out. You have to pay for a whole month whether she stayed there a month or a week. It was not a very good set-up for respite care. The staff quoted a price and it included everything. Sommerset Neighborhood has been caring for my in-laws.

Royal Palaces

I met with the lady at Sommerset Neighborhood, the one that I talked to on the phone. The rooms were even better than the other facility. The problem there is they divide the area into multiple areas depending on the level of care the person needs (like moderate, light, or a lot of care). The staff said they would put my sister into a lot of care because she needs help going to the bathroom and pretty much with everything. When I went to that area, it was a very depressing area because everyone seemed to be at death's door. I don't want to put my sister in that environment because she is not quite like that.

For a time, it was then used by the wife of Charles I, Henrietta Maria of France, who was a Roman Catholic and had a chapel created within the buildings. From the interesting and challenging temporary art exhibitions hosted in its gallery space to the outdoor music gigs and film screenings, there’s always something new to explore. At the Restoration the widowed Queen, Henrietta Maria, returned to Somerset House to find her fine palace in a state of ruin.

We were going to put dad into the Sommerset Neighborhood, but he passed away, so we didn't. So I kind of wonder about how they get around that well in those places, but it was nice. They had a pretty large dining room and it was also nice. So, I was hoping that my dad would be all right, but it was clean. I didn't talk to very many people, but we liked the lady I talked to.

Yes, they had music, art, and church activities but best aspect was the staff and their kind care for our mother at this time in her life. My mom lived here for three months before she passed away. I found the staff to be very helpful and kind to her even when she wasn’t back to them. She was in Level 2 care and then moved to Progressive as her health deteriorated.

We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future. If you’re looking for where Somerset House is, it can be a little tricky as there are actually four entrances. However, each one will take you through to the exhibitions, cafe and restaurant. As it is such a well-known and loved icon of London, Somerset House has featured as a film location in many movies, from James Bond to Sherlock Holmes.

The entire staff, including Linda, Jessica, Cheryl, Mike, Ashley, Frances, Janice, George, the kitchen staff, everyone are remarkable. Our mother stayed here after living in independent for several years. We had received several recommendations from professionals saying it would be a good place for her to live. Many, many of them had worked there for years. They all helped out doing each others job to provide the best care for the residents. They had true relationships and were kind and caring.

It’s not only in the summertime when Somerset House’s iconic courtyard is transformed into something spectacular. Each winter, the courtyard becomes a little slice of a winter wonderland, with its own skating rink. Running for two weeks, the event sees the courtyard brimming with movie lovers from everyday Londoners (and visitors) to even a few famous faces. The concerts are held in the expansive courtyard area of Somerset House. It’s pretty amazing to revel to the sounds of your current faves while in the shadow of one of London’s most historic buildings.

It seems to be a very stable, caring environment. Everybody there seems to enjoy their work and care about the residents. They seem to be very comfortable, very clean, and very well run.

Though modest in size, the exhibition is a reminder why Salgado is one of the few living legends in photography.

They have live birds and benches in their section that they can go over and look at. I haven't gotten to see any activities because of COVID. We're not able to go and see inside, but we can visit outside right now. He's in progressive care where they need more assistance.

We came in there unannounced, we just kind of dropped in, and the receptionist was very nice. She gave us a tour, and we saw one room, which was very nice. I was very impressed with the size of the room, with the bathroom, and the closet. I don't think my mother would feel claustrophobic in any kind of way, and it would feel like her own little apartment. There was room for a bed, for a sofa, and anything that she could put in there.

The royal chapel was sacked, the fittings burnt and the altarpiece by Rubens stabbed by a pike and thrown into the Thames. As befits its Southern California location, the house is designed to integrate inside and outside via a series of sliding glass doors operated with smart house technology from a cell phone. The outside seating and dining areas are oriented around a 175-foot linear pool that flows into a waterfall cascading into an atrium garden. I thought that the staff there where always in good spirits with the residents there even if they themselves were having some personal issues going on at the time. The staff was very kind and gave the residents the time and attention they deserved and needed. They weren't understaffed either which makes a big difference.

Between 1608 and 1612 she completed Protector Somerset’s outer court and modernised the Strand façade. She also rebuilt the inner court creating a magnificent suite of state rooms and built a long gallery ending in a closet and library. Between her house and the Thames a garden was laid out with extraordinary waterworks, a fountain and a grotto. The house was renamed Denmark House in her honour.

The building then became the quarters for the Parliamentary Army with its contents sold and the profit going towards the war efforts. By the mid-1770s, Old Somerset House was in such bad condition that much of it needed to be demolished. In its place, William Chamberlain designed a new building, which would be open, at least in part, to the public to enjoy (lest they get any more ideas about overthrowing the monarchy). It’s refreshing to see such an important historical site showcasing such an eclectic range of contemporary arts. Never one to be put in a box, past exhibitions have ranged from a collection of Snoopy cartoons to shows as part of London Fashion Week and just about everything in between. Somerset House plays host to a revolving door of artistic exhibitions.

My mother called Somerset "home" for the last few years of her life. She felt safe and well-cared-for and loved her room, furnished with her own possesions, surrounded by things she loved. My siblings and I had confidence in the staff who met her needs each day and night, providing the care she needed when we were no longer able to meet her special needs. I was impressed with low staff turn-over, and appreciated the loving attention that each care-giver provided so that she was familiar with each one and knew them by name, claiming them as friends. Mom died a few weeks ago, and during her last days, the nursing staff was very helpful in seeing us through those final days, helping us secure excellent hospice care and watching over her til the end. I'm so glad we had this facility and the wonderful people who work there, from administrators and professional medical team, to kitchen and housekeeping providers.
